Cloisonne is an ancient process of enameling. Fine silver, gold, copper or brass wires are formed and then placed on a base of the same metal. Enamel is then applied between the wires on layers and fired each time. When the enamel is level with the top of the wires the piece is ground smooth and polished. Much of the beauty of Cloisonne is in the painting and the complex variations of opaque, transparent, and opalescent colors and for this reason each piece is unique.
