Introduction

It is often said that the best measure of quality in art is the strength of the viewer's reaction.  To create an impact, the image must clearly communicate the artist's depth of feeling. The landscapes John Gavrilis captures on film present a clear vision of how he feels about the place from which they are drawn.  His love of nature's beauty is reflected in his photographs, but the genesis of his work is sometimes hidden.  Gavrilis relies on his internal compass for locating meaningful images, both for inspiration and for satisfaction.
Despite the precision of composition, color, and light, his photographs are emotional statements, not detached intellectual studies.  His photographs are not a travel diary, but printed works of art.  As photographer, artist and environmentalist;  the 4x5 view camera is his brush, the earth's colors his palette, and the negative his canvas.

About the Artist

Born July 9, 1950, a native of Berkeley, JOHN GAVRILIS, has resided in Northern California all of his life.  He makes his home in Aptos, along the Monterey Peninsula, where the ocean is part of his daily routine.  John has been a professional photographer since 1976.  A former chronicler of the halcyon days of the San Francisco music scene, he has captured such immortal portraits of the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead and other rock legends.
Gavrilis now concentrates on nature's landscapes.  His first published book, entitled "Rhythm of the Land", takes you from the rugged shoreline of the West Coast, to the Indian lands of the Southwest, to the autumn landscapes of New England.  The book's images represent nearly 20 years of personal photographic memories, including previously unreleased photographs.
John Gavrilis travels throughout the year, creating and exhibiting his photographs.  He participates in approximately twenty five art exhibits a year throughout California and the Southwest.  Hopefully those who acquire his limited edition prints will appreciate the effort involved in creating the images and share the same excitement he experienced when viewing the scene through the lens.
The body of John's work is dedicated to the memory of his mother and father, who, in their final years, were able to proudly share in their son's achievements.
