Carol Ward

After raising her family while conducting a successful career in banking, Carol fell in love with sculpting stone.  She began her formal study in 1989 under the tutelage of well-known Santa Cruz sculptor, Angelo Grova.  In 1990 she traveled to Pietrasanta, Italy to study at the Marble and Art Institute with Pasquel Martini.  Success came quickly, with many commissions for her exciting figures, land and marine animals.  In 1993 Carol moved to Pine Mountain Lake where she established her studio and art gallery.  She missed her beloved ocean and returned to Santa Cruz in 1998.  She became a volunteer for the California Sea Lion Rescue group.  When a British documentary was being made at the Marine Mammal Center in Moss Landing, Carol's marine sculpture was included in the film.

"My first experience with using my own hands to carve a shape from stone to form a figure, was a turning point in my life, for as the figure appeared to grow out of the stone, I was so filled with wonder, joy and passion for this media, seemingly, to increase with each and every piece I sculpt.  The love for graceful beauty of sea creatures, is portrayed in the stone renderings of all Seals, Whales, Dolphins, and Manta Rays.  The Yosemite area has provided more of the animal type inspirations, such as Squirrels, Deer, Tortoises, Bears and Butterflies. I have now found the media that allows me to express my natural love of life."

Carol has shown in galleries from Shelter cove to Carmel on the coast, throughout the Central Valley and the Mother Lode area, including the Yosemite Valley.  Her range is amazing;  from lovable brown bear cubs to serious mother-and-child figurative pieces.  She works primarily in marble, but loves the colorful possibilities of alabaster as well.

Her current studio is in the Michael Angelo art center in Santa Cruz.  She is currently represented by galleries in Capitola and Scotts Valley.
